(bright upbeat music) - Salt Lake County's Zoo, Arts & Parks program, or ZAP, provides essential funding for nonprofits that enrich local culture, arts, and recreation.
Cody Goetz explains to us now how organizations can apply.
Welcome, Cody.
- Welcome, thank you for having me.
- So what do organizations, nonprofit organizations, need to do in order to apply for this?
- Yeah, so right now, we just launched our annual grant cycle, which opened up on March 2.
So right now, we're just checking eligibility for 501c3 nonprofits.
So if you're a nonprofit that primarily focuses on arts, culture, botanical, or zoological activities and purposes, you're probably likely eligible.
And you can start applying today.
- About how much grant money is available?
- Yeah, so that varies, depending on what the sales tax brings in each year.
So for those that may not know, ZAP's actually funded by 1/10 of 1% of local sales and use tax.
So every $10 of sales tax, one penny comes to the ZAP program.
And that just fluctuates every year based on the economy.
- Wow, one penny goes- - One penny.
- To ZAP, but what does that do in terms of helping nonprofits?
- Yeah, for sure.
So part of the funding actually comes for grants.
And so we provide grant funding to eligible nonprofits and municipalities here in the county.
And so it's a really small investment from our community that makes a huge impact.
- Are there any programs in the past that have been funded that you can kind of share or as an example?
- Yeah, for example, if you've ever attended like the Utah Arts Festival or gone to The Gale Museum down in South Jordan, or maybe you've seen a performance or gone to a cultural event at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center over in West Valley City.
Those are all some of our grantees that get funding, and they do programming throughout the year.
- Wow, that's incredible.
Well, thank you so much for sharing this information.
If you would like to learn more about this grant, all you have to do is go to saltlakecounty.gov/zap to get more information on it.
The eligibility form and grant manual are available right now, so you can head on over and pick those up.
Applications will be accepted between April 1 and May 29.
Well, I'm Liz Adeola and thank you so much for watching "Contact."
