(upbeat music) - Utah Public Radio is partnering with StoryCorps to bring their mobile recording booth to St. George and Springdale this May.
It's all about preserving and sharing stories.
And here with more details is Kerry Bringhurst.
Hi Kerry.
- Hi.
- Such a pleasure to have you here.
- It's great to be here.
Isn't it always fun to talk about storytelling and... - Oh yes.
- Giving voice to people and letting them have an opportunity to share their story.
So that's really what StoryCorps's all about.
- Yeah, and I love it for that reason because like you, I am a huge proponent of people telling their stories and preserving those stories.
I think it's very important.
- Yeah, the preservation is as important as anything.
And the topics can vary from family history, things that have happened in the community that are of historic nature or personal stories.
And the way StoryCorps works is you take a friend, a family member, a loved one, you go into a recording studio that's in a trailer, it's an Airstream trailer, and it's beautiful.
It's very private, it's very comfortable, and you basically have a conversation about anything you would like to talk about.
They record that, they make that recording available to you, and it's also archived in the Library of Congress.
So that archiving of personal stories and histories is very important.
- It's wonderful.
And now they'll give you a card to give you the link to where your story is in that archive too.
- And it's nice because you can google, if somebody you know in your family has done this in the past, you can Google their name and it will send you to the archive in the Library of Congress.
And then Utah Public Radio will take several of these stories and will produce segments, about three to four-minute segments that will air on Utah Public Radio throughout the state.
And then we'll archive those on our website.
So that's another resource.
- Wonderful.
Wonderful.
And then how do people like, hook up to make their story part of it?
- So we are taking reservations for both the St. George and the Springdale events that are happening in May.
And you can reserve a spot to record at upr.org.
- Wonderful.
Well, I'm so glad you're doing it, and thank you so much for being here.
- My pleasure.
- And if you'd like to know more how you can be part of the Utah Public Radio's StoryCorps, they're coming to St. George and Springdale, April 23rd to May 23rd.
Our recording reservations are open at Worthen Park in St. George.
Just go to upr.org.
I'm Mary Dickson, thanks for watching "Contact".
