Where to Watch Contact
Contact is available to stream on pbs.org and the PBS app.
(upbeat music) - The Utah Food Bank Summer Kids Cafe program helps fight childhood hunger by providing free nutritious meals to young people across Utah.
Joining us here on "Contact" to share more is Ginette Bott.
Thank you so much for being here, Ginette.
- Thank you for the invitation.
- So tell me about this program and who can participate.
- Summer feeding is very important.
Our kids are out of school.
Families on tight budgets now are having to provide additional meals from their home, so kids can take advantage of this.
Any child 18 or under is eligible to participate.
It's just finding a location in the neighborhood and getting your kids there at the right time.
- [Liz] And what kind of food do you guys provide for the children?
- You know, this is very similar to a school lunch type of a product.
We have, you know, four different products in each lunch.
The recipe rotates a little bit, so it's not exactly the same thing every single day, but it's enough for a child to recognize that there's a solid meal in the middle of the day that can help them get through the summer.
- And why is it important to provide this at like multiple locations instead of just one spot?
- Well, our kids are all over the state.
Utah Food Bank has 63 sites that we're responsible for, but other organizations are doing sites throughout the state, so it is sitewide.
We're really trying to get to as many kids as possible, and we're really trying to have an impact, a positive impact, on people's food budgets for the summer.
- So many people wonder or worry that they have to, you know, fill out forms or do things to participate.
What do parents need to do or kids need to do to take advantage of this?
- Just simply walk up to the truck.
There'll be someone there from our staff who will ask a couple of questions, and then they're given the food, and it's a real easy thing to do.
And it really is a process that kids are comfortable doing.
So their kids, you know, it's at all different locations, rec centers, and sometimes in a school parking lot, or you know, multicultural centers.
So a lot of activity going on.
The summer meal is just one more activity for the kids to enjoy.
- And the kids can take it, you know.
They don't have to eat it right there, right?
- They can take it with them.
In some of the rural communities, they'll get multiple lunches for multiple days, because that transportation might be a problem.
So we're trying to be as creative as we can be for those families.
- Well, thank you so much, Ginette, for sharing this information.
