(bright upbeat music) - Lyrical Opera Theater brings Mozart's beloved "The Magic Flute" to the stage.
It's a whimsical tale of love, courage, and wisdom.
And here to tell us more is Executive Director Lynette Owens.
Hi, Lynette, welcome back.
- Thank you.
- So you're doing the big Mozart opera, and let's tell people kind of what it's about and how you are setting it.
- Thank you.
It's "The Magic Flute.
It's one of the most beloved family-friendly operas in the repertoire.
And it's a fairy tale.
It's filled with humor, adventure, and romance.
The Prince Tamino is given a magical flute, and this magical flute was carved out of a 1,000 year-old oak tree on a stormy night.
And the Queen of the Night has sent him on a quest to rescue her daughter, the Princess Pamina, from the evil clutches of Sarastro.
And unlike a lot of operas and a lot of fairytales, this opera ends happily ever after.
(both laughing) - Which is such a relief for many people.
- Nobody dies.
(both laughing) - Well, there you have it, and I know you set it in this whimsical fairytale setting.
Like, it's in a forest.
- In a forest.
- Yeah.
- Yep.
Yep, our audiences are going to get to experience too, the most... One of the most famous arias in the operatic repertoire, also very vocally difficult called "Der Holle Rache" where the Queen of the Night commands her daughter Pamina to kill the evil Sarastro.
And it's got the famous... It starts... (sings in German) And then it has... (vocalizing) - [Mary] Oh, right.
- That audiences will enjoy and it's just full of fireworks.
- Oh, wonderful.
I know you've got a huge cast.
You've got, like, 45 people you have to coordinate.
- Yes.
- It's double cast.
- Double cast.
- Yeah.
- Yep, and it's an opera that... As you said it, it's a... It's an opera about courage and wisdom, and our audiences will walk away inspired and thrilled that our world-class artists here in Utah can put on such spectacular entertainment.
- Wonderful.
Well, thanks for being here and good luck with everything.
- Thank you.
- And if you'd like to know more about that upcoming production of The Lyrical Opera Theater, "The Magic Flute," it opens on Valentine's.
