(bright upbeat music) - Pioneer Theater Company presents the world premiere of "Ten Brave Seconds," a heartfelt new musical unfolding over the course of one life-changing day, and here to share more is artistic director Karen Azenberg.
Karen, hi.
This is an exciting one that is being developed and you've got two great talents coming together to make this happen.
- It's very exciting.
It's very exciting to be a part of a world premiere musical.
I mean, we do plays from time to time, but musicals are a big, there's a lot of pieces that have to come together and it's so exciting to watch it happen right in our theater.
- Oh, yeah, and I know you're bringing Jeff Talbott, the playwright, who I loved "The Messenger," that you did, his piece, and he's teaming up with a great composer.
- Yeah, Will Van Dyke, who most recently was the musical director of "Mamma Mia!"
on Broadway and "Swept Away" on Broadway and the recent "Little Shop of Horrors" revival, so, I mean, we got some street cred there with these guys.
- [Mary] And you've got an incredibly full cast.
- Yes, it's a very young cast because the characters are all young in high school, so it's, you know, the future of Broadway is like right in our building.
- Yeah, okay, and so let's talk, I know it's hard to describe the whole premise of it, but kind of give us a little insight.
- There's a life-changing day for Mike, our central character, and his family.
A lot can happen in a day and I think it's really interesting sort of event to explore, and it's kind of coming of age.
Mike becomes a grownup in front of our eyes 'cause he realizes about being part of the world and speaking your truth in the world and it's kind of an exciting moment for him.
- And I know on the line, you told me about like the mother who says, "Count to 10 and speak your truth."
- "Count to 10 and speak your truth," and that's sort of a theme that runs through the show musically, dramatically.
It's exciting.
- Okay, I'm looking forward to it, and thank you so much for being here, thanks.
- Thank you.
- And if you'd like to know more about that upcoming production at Pioneer Theatre, "Ten Brave Seconds," it runs January 30th to February 14th.
