(upbeat music) - Utah Museum of Fine Arts invites you to Storywork: the Prints of Marie Watt, an exhibition honoring her artistry and storytelling.
Emily Lawhead, associate curator is here to tell us more.
Hi Emily.
Thanks for being here.
- Thank you.
- So this is exciting that you're bringing Marie, let's talk about her first.
She comes from a very interesting tradition.
- Yeah so Marie Watt is a Seneca artist that also has German Scots ancestry.
And so she really likes to weave together these different stories and traditions that have impacted her life and many of those around her.
But she's really interested in those that connect all of us and that are shared kind of stories, memories, traditions that we all live with.
- And I know she's been honored and received awards, so it's lucky to get her.
- Yes, we're totally thrilled to be working with her and collaborating with her and the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation on this show.
She's recently gained a lot of acclaim for her work, which is well deserved, and we're just so thrilled to bring her to Utah.
- Great, so tell us a little about her work and what pieces will be included in the exhibition.
- Yeah, so the exhibition is called Storywork.
So it's very much about her work of bringing stories together.
So she's interested in everything from indigenous and Seneca creation stories to ancient Greek and Roman myths to the epics of "Star Wars" and "Star Trek" and popular culture stories, but also those that really weave us together as people that we share through objects like blankets or these kind of everyday things that hold our memories and tell our stories, and she does that in this exhibition of her practice, which has a lot of works that are with collaborations with master printers and printmaking studios around the country.
And so there's many, many works of that part of the collaborative printmaking process, but it's not just a printmaking show, even though the title has the prints front and center.
But there's also some of her monumental blanket stack sculptures, which are beautiful.
Some massive textile works, and some sculptures as well, so there's lots to see.
- A great exhibit.
And I thank you for being here.
Thanks so much.
- Yeah.
- And if you'd like to know more about that upcoming exhibition at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts and events around it, it's Storywork: the Prints of Marie Watt, opens February 21st.
