(cheerful music) - Utah Pioneer Heritage Arts blends storytelling with environmental action in a unique effort to restore the Great Salt Lake.
And here to share more is Clive Romney.
Hi, Clive.
This is is quite an ambitious project you've got going.
- It's keeping me up at nights.
I was up until midnight last night, up at 5:00 AM.
(Mary laughs) But it's so exciting.
- Yes, and you're working with schools and elementary kids.
So kind of explain the project for us.
- Okay, for the last 18 years since the formation of Utah Pioneer Heritage Arts, we've done Utah history assemblies in the elementary schools, but it's us presenting.
Well that's good, but if the kids present, they grow, they absorb the content so much better and it empowers them to act.
So for this, which is about saving the Great Salt Lake, we've written a program for them to present in many different ways.
Ideally, it would be with the full soundtrack, with the overhead video screen amplifying what's happening on stage.
But they could just do it as a reader's theater in their own class.
You know, and it's so educationally dense and rich with material.
I bet adults would not know 10% of the information that's in this program.
- [Mary] Wow.
- And the script is available for anyone who wants to use it.
- That's great, and I know your idea is that you will then film the kids doing it and release that.
- Yes, we're auditioning a group of talented, very talented fifth and sixth graders who will be the actors, singers, dancers, storytellers on stage.
And we will film it over spring break and then do the post-production and have it ready for release at the Beverley Taylor Sorenson, well, the BYU Arts Express.
- Wow, well, it's a great thing you're doing and thank you for being here to tell us about it.
Thank you.
- Thank you.
- And if you'd like to know more about that huge project of the Utah Pioneer Heritage Arts and the Great Salt Lake, go to upharts.org.
That's upharts.org.
I'm Mary Dickson, thanks for watching "Contact."
