(gentle music) - Pioneer Theatre Company's, "What the Constitution Means to Me," is a hilarious, hopeful, and achingly human new play, about four women and the founding document that shaped their lives.
Karen Azenberg is here with details about the show.
Hi, Karen.
Welcome back.
So, first, tell us a little about Heidi Schreck, because this is autobiographical.
She wrote it.
She was a debater.
- Yeah.
And she performed the show on Broadway.
It was extraordinary.
We were also very lucky because she was on campus and she came by for our first day of rehearsal.
It's a amazing story.
And really kind of, wonderful woman empowerment, next generation, future of this country.
Maybe a few women can really get in there and lead the way.
- That's great.
And it's very timely, we have to say.
So who's playing Heidi?
- So a wonderful actress from New York named Laura Jordan is playing Heidi.
We actually realized we had worked together, (clears throat) number of years ago.
(Mary laughs) But she's extraordinary, absolutely riveting.
So she's terrific.
And then we have these four young women from different schools around the valley, who are playing the debater that debates with her at the end of the play.
And they are...
They do embody the future of this country.
They are incredible young people.
- [Mary] Yeah.
And the youngest one's, what?
13.
- 13.
- [Mary] That's pretty impressive.
They must be thrilled to be on stage doing this.
- It's kinda neat.
- Yeah.
- They're neat.
- Yeah.
And then you've got one of your favorites, Ben Cherry.
- Ben Cherry returns.
I think some of us feel like it isn't a season if Ben Cherry doesn't visit with us.
(Mary laughs) And he is playing, what we call the positive male energy in the play.
(laughs) - All right.
All right.
So, would you call it a feminist sort of look at the Constitution?
- I think it is.
Brings to light some feminist issues.
I think it brings to light discussion.
- Good.
And hopefully it provokes a lot of discussion.
So thank you so much for being here.
- Absolutely.
- Yeah.
