(upbeat music) - Pioneer Theatre Company presents the Utah Premier of "The Prom", giving audiences the opportunity to see this seven-time Tony-nominated hit.
Musical actor Anne Tolpegin is here as our guest today.
Hi, there, Anne, so nice to have you.
- Thank you, very happy to be here.
- Yeah, so talk about "Prom".
- This is such a fantastic musical, like you said, we're really excited to bring it to Utah.
It's the first time that it's ever been done in the state, and it's a wonderful, wonderful show.
It's nominated for seven Tony Awards.
It's about a young woman named Emma, who grew up in Indiana in a small town.
She wanted to bring her girlfriend to the prom, and the local school board shut it down.
So four down-and-out Broadway divas come to rally around her, and it's a beautiful show.
Really fun, lots of great dancing, just heartwarming.
It's a great, great night of theater.
- It's great.
And you play Dee Dee, one of the divas.
- I'm Dee Dee Allen, the diva, yes.
(laughing) Typecast.
No, it's a wonderful, yeah, it's the role that Meryl Streep played in the movie.
- [Mary] Yeah.
- And it's the role that Beth Leavel played on Broadway, and it's a wonderful, fun, ridiculous part.
So we're having a good time.
- That sounds just great.
- Yeah.
- Yeah.
So talk about some of the other folks in the cast.
- Sure, we have a wonderful team with us.
We have a number of actors from New York who are, we're all do playing the roles that we do in New York anyway.
We're all Broadway, off Broadway regional actors who know a lot about the business.
And so we're just having, we're all here having a wonderful time playing our diva selves.
(laughing) - Channeling your inner diva.
- Poking fun at ourselves, yeah.
It's wonderful.
- That sounds great.
And you've been on the stage at Pioneer Theater before.
- I have.
I am so happy to be making my fourth appearance at Pioneer.
I was here a couple of years ago with "Sweeney Todd", and a couple years before that with "The Last Ship".
So it's such an incredible theater to work at.
And the audiences here are so spectacular.
I'm thrilled to be back.
- And they love musicals.
- They do.
- Well, thank you you so much for being here.
- Yes, yeah, yeah, thank you.
- And if you'd like to know more about that upcoming production, "The Prom" at Pioneer Theatre, it runs May 12th through 27th.
