(upbeat music) - Amazing, beautiful, fun.
These are all words used to describe the Parade of Gardens Southern Utah, an annual self-guided tour highlighting waterwise landscapes across Washington County.
Karen Goodfellow is here to chat with us about this showcase.
Welcome, Karen.
- Thank you, we are very excited to be able to share information on Parade of Gardens.
This is our third year to have this event in southwest Utah, and considering the water year that we're having throughout the mountain west, it's really important for people to know how they can have beautiful outdoor spaces and not use a lot of water.
- I hear quite a few people love to participate in this event.
What do you think it is that draws hundreds of people to the Parade of Gardens?
- Yes, we've had 500 people attend.
We had 120 volunteers last year, and I think people are just really excited to get out to go behind the gates of some beautiful homes and see both front yards and backyards of how people create these wonderful outdoor spaces.
- Because sometimes people can feel like there's only one thing they can do.
I know growing up, we just had rocks in our yard in Arizona, but there's so much more than that, right?
- So much more.
We have people on a quarter of an acre, who have planted 30 to 50 fruit trees, grapevines growing all across their back fence.
We have people that have amazing koi ponds where they have fish, and they can actually grow things all year long, even water plants and mostly trees.
We really want to encourage people to plant a lot of trees because in the desert, when you stand under a tree, even in a hundred degree heat, you feel the relief.
So trees are very important.
- Yeah, there's something definitely for everyone.
They can be inspired and they can find so much in the Parade of Gardens.
Thank you so much for joining us.
We have some information that we can share with viewers on the screen about how they can participate with the Parade of Gardens Southern Utah.
It's April 24th, until the 26th.
