(upbeat music) - The Nihon Matsuri Japan festival invites you to dance to J-Pop performances, listen to Taiko drumming, and experience a traditional Japanese tea ceremony.
Here with more details on the event are Stephanie Sueoka and Floyd Mori.
Welcome, thank you so much for being here.
- Thank you for having us.
- Stephanie, how excited are you for this event that's more than two decades in the making?
- We are very excited.
This is our 21st year.
It's more than just a fun day for everyone.
It's an opportunity for us to share our rich culture and long history here in Utah and to pass on our heritage to our fourth, fifth, sixth generation children so that they can carry on our heritage.
- Yeah, there's so much to offer at this event.
There's the music, there's the performances, and also the food.
What is your favorite part of the festival?
- I like the entertainment.
A lot of dancing, some singing, some martial arts, so a lot of different kinds of cultural entertainment for the people.
So it's very, very entertaining - [Liz] And to see families go there with their children, and the children learning as well.
What does that mean to you?
- It really means a lot because that's really our future.
Trying to instill in young people the importance of just carrying on our traditions and culture.
But that in our history on Japantown is over a hundred years, so just making sure that we stay relevant.
We do have a dedicated children's area, so it is definitely a family time for people coming to visit.
- I love that.
And it's grown and changed so much throughout the years.
How do you keep it fresh over the years?
- We always have a committee and we try to get young people involved.
This year, we have at the two anchor organizations, the Japanese Church of Christ and the Salt Lake Buddhist Temple, we are doing culture and art, and we have collaborated with the Brigham City Museum.
They did a wonderful exhibit about early farmers and so be sure to check out the exhibits to see the history of the Japantown area.
- I love that.
Well, let's get everybody some information so they can check this out.
