(lively music) - The Nafanua Foundation uplifts Samoan women and youth through culturally rooted programs.
And here to tell us more about the organization and some upcoming events is executive director Gwendolyn Tuaitanu.
Hi, Gwendolyn.
Welcome.
So why don't you start by telling us about the foundation and its mission?
- Absolutely, Nafanua Foundation, we are a nonprofit organization that helps equip our Samoan women and youth to learn the traditions of their ancestors and heritage, while at the same time being change makers in their communities.
- Ah, it's great, and I'm sure you give them great voice, an opportunity to express their voices.
And talk a little about the leadership program, which that's what it does.
- Yes, so one of the programs that we do offer is the Nafanua Leadership Fellows program that allows each of these young women, the participants, to not only be educated on the heritage and the values of our ancestors, but to also use that to be more leaders, and like I said, change makers in the communities.
We provide them opportunities to do that so that way they can excel in their personal goals.
- And I know part of what you're gonna do is take them to American Samoa.
- We are, yes.
So part of the program, they are also working with people in American Samoa to develop more programs to take back home and assist our people there.
And so it's a great opportunity for them.
- And I know May 9th, you have the leadership dinner coming up.
- We do, so May 9th, we have the showcase where our fellows will showcase everything they've been learning for the past 15 weeks.
And they'll also share the projects that they'll be conducting in American Samoa.
- And then I know you've also got a beauty pageant coming up.
- We do, so another part that we offer is our Miss Tausala America program.
It is May 10th at the Midvale Elementary.
And it allows them to also showcase the beauty of our culture, their voice, and also their talent.
- Ah, wonderful.
Well, I'm so glad you're doing it.
And thank you for being here.
Thanks.
- Thank you so much.
- And if you'd like to know more about those upcoming events of the Nafanua Foundation, May 9th is the Leadership Fellows Showcase and May 10th is the Miss Tausala America Pageant.

I'm Mary Dickson.
