On May 10, 1869, two steam locomotives chugged across a barren landscape in northern Utah until they stood nose-to-nose. It was called an opportunity of a lifetime; perhaps the opportunity of a century. The isolation of the nation's most unique territory was about to end, as men raced from east and west to meet at a place called Promontory.
