(upbeat music) - Noorda Center for the Performing Arts is presenting Hip Hop Orchestra Experience.
The unique group that samples principles of hip hop and classical music.
Joining us remotely today is composer and pianist, JooWan Kim, who leads the orchestra.
So JooWan, yeah, obviously it's a merging of hip hop with orchestral music.
How did you come up with this?
- Well, it was my protest against concert music, so I wanted to create something new.
And then I sampled from hip hop and ended up doing something that's neither hip hop nor classical.
- Okay, and you perform with, is it a chamber ensemble or a full orchestra?
- For this engagement, we'll have UVU student orchestra with 13 strings, and then woodwind quintet and then soprano.
And then we will actually have UVU dancers that are choreographing to the music.
- Okay, I mean, very interesting.
I'm trying to imagine how it all sounds.
You do something called method sampling.
What is that?
- It's the principle of borrowing or sampling foreign rationales, and then by reframing them to innovate or profoundly change the structures.
- Okay, and you said you did this as part of, you got into it as part of a master's thesis.
- It was actually me realizing what I did in how to write this music.
And I thought that innovation only goes through this kind of process where you actually sample from foreign rationales and then by reframing them to go somewhere else.
- Okay, so it's gonna be a really interesting experience, I'm sure.
Thank you so much for being here and we're interested to see it.
Thank you.
- Thank you very much.
- And if you'd like to know more about that upcoming concert at the Noorda, it will be Hip Hop Orchestra Experience, January 26th and 27th at 7:30 PM.
