(upbeat music) - Epilepsy Foundation of Utah is holding its Summer Festival and Walk for an evening of games and giving to raise awareness in support of the epilepsy community.
Teens Speak Up, Ambassador, Lydia Prestwich, is here with more details about the event.
Hi, Lydia.
- Hi.
- Welcome and thanks for coming, and tell us what's happening at the event.
- So, on June 21st at Wheeler Farms, there will be music, fun, games, there will be face painting and character artists, like the people who draw you, and a memorial wall.
So, please bring pictures of your loved ones with epilepsy.
I think it'll be so much fun.
Please dress up in all purple, if you would like to come join us on our walk.
- Ah, that's great.
And talk about why it matters.
- This matters because one in 26 people will be diagnosed with epilepsy in their lifetime, and over 30,000 people in Utah have epilepsy.
That's a lot of people.
(Lydia giggles) - Oh yeah, for sure it is.
And I know you have experience yourself.
- Yeah.
- So you know why it's important that people are trained to recognize what it is.
- Yeah, it's very scary sometimes, because if people aren't trained, it can be very dangerous, and you can be left alone or unconscious in places where it's not really safe.
I've had that experience personally, where I've been left alone in hallways or in classrooms where people don't know what to do with me.
- [Mary] Yeah.
- It's very scary.
- Wow, and so I know the foundation kinda helps train people like classmates, like teachers.
- Yeah.
- And who else do they help train?
- So, they have programs where they can help both those people and also people in your church groups or police and firefighters, because they don't always know how to express, like empathy and emotions.
'Cause they know the medical side, but they don't always know how to help the, 'cause it's really scary when you first wake up.
They don't know how to help you when you... - [Mary] Yeah.
- Like the empathetic side.
- Yeah, well, good luck with everything you're doing and thanks for doing it, thank you.
- Of course.
- And if you'd like to know more about that upcoming Epilepsy Foundation of Utah, Summer Festival and Walk, it's June 21st from 5:30 to 8:30 at Wheeler Historic Farm.
