(cheerful music) - Salt Lake City's Dutch Day festival brings the Netherlands iconic orange madness to Utah.
Picture this, an orange bike parade, delicious Dutch cuisine and a flea market ran by children.
Katie Reid joins us now to explain that last part.
And you're in beautiful orange as well.
Welcome, Katie.
- Well thank you.
Thank you for having me.
- So a flea market ran by children.
What's that about?
- That's a big aspect of the holiday Koningsdag in the Netherlands.
Kids can set up a, and we're hosting it also, kids can set up some, like a flea market.
They can sell their old toys, they can play an instrument and they can even do like a carnival type game.
And it's all free to sign up.
We can do that on our website.
- I think I saw a video of that where kids were smashing tomatoes.
There was like a pie in the face kind of contest.
That's amazing.
- It's just a way to make some extra money for the kids.
- I love that.
And orange, orange is a huge theme.
Why is that?
- It's the national color of the Netherlands.
If you've ever seen them at the Olympics, it's like that.
But the whole country dresses up for the holiday.
It's their national color.
- What does it mean for your organization to bring this celebration to Utah?
- It's pretty important.
My grandparents were immigrants and there's actually a lot more Dutch immigrants than you even know.
We're kind of quiet except for when this holiday comes out and everybody trickles out in their orange and gets all excited and they love their heritage.
- And I hear there's also gonna be music they're playing as well.
- Yes.
Lots of authentic Dutch music and dancing.
We have multiple Dutch, well not, local schools, Dutch dance schools that are coming.
And then at the end of the day we'll have dance, a big whole festival line dancing that everybody can join in and just party.
- Wow.
It sounds like so much fun.
And it's happening at Millcreek Commons this year, right?
- Yes.
It's our fifth time of doing the festival.
- Fifth time doing the, well, congratulations.
I wanna check it out, and I know some of our viewers will wanna check it out as well.
We have the information on your screen.
It is the Dutch Day Festival, April 25th, 11:00 AM until 5:00 PM at Millcreek Common.
