(upbeat music) - PYGmalion Productions brings "Becky Nurse of Salem" to the stage.
It's a bold new play, blending humor and grit.
And joining us is the star, Teresa Sanderson, to tell us all about the production.
Theresa, how great to have you!
- I know.
It's so wonderful to see you.
It's such a joy.
- Yes.
You're such an amazing actress and I'm so excited about this play because- - Thank you so much.
- It's very relevant.
So tell us about it.
- It is, it's very timely, as you think you're just going back to 1692 and the Salem witch projects, but you can't believe the similarities of what it was like.
The conflict in Salem was that there were people in the town and there were people in the woods, and the people in the forest didn't wanna give up their land and come into the city, but the city folks wanted their land.
And so part of it was that they decided to have a, you know, it got riled up into where they were accusing women of witchcraft so- - Really?
- Yes.
- Lethal results.
- With very lethal results.
There were 30 women that were accused and 17 that were hung, 19 total with two men that were hung also.
- Wow.
And I know you play the Becky Nurse who was central in all this.
You're in every scene except one.
- Yeah.
- Huge role.
- Yeah.
And I play Becky Nurse, who's the descendant of Rebecca Nurse, and then we get sucked through a hole in time.
And I play Rebecca Nurse or yeah, Rebecca Nurse the great, great, great grandmother.
- [Mary] Wow.
Who was actually hung.
- She was actually hung on the 17th of this month.
And we'll be running during the time that she was hung.
There were six women hung that day.
- Oh, wow.
And you've got quite a great cast you're working with as well.
- Oh my gosh.
It's the most amazing cast.
So much fun.
Morag Shepherd really knows how to bring a cast and a group together.
And we're doing it in Brechtian styles, so it's very kind of bold and in your face.
- Great.
- But we're just having so much fun putting it together.
- Well, I absolutely can't wait to see it.
And thank you so much for coming.
Thanks.
- Thank you.
